A friend of mine stayed with us recently. Although it was good to spend time with someone dear to me, who I had not seen in a long while, the new energy in the house agitated Laila. She does not engage with people she does not know. And it takes at least a week before she will even try to make an appearance and get to know someone. Unfortunately, this particular visit included a layer of agitation and anxiety cultivated in my guest over many months of living through the distress of a divorce. The short version of the story is that Laila internalized that frantic energy and began scratching more. I make sure that there are spaces at home that are designated for kitties only but they feel and understand when someone around them is hurting and they act accordingly, despite having a refuge.

All of its surfaces can be scratched so cats can relieve their stress indoors. Stress-free cats are happy cats. And dedicated toys for cats to scratch save furniture, shoes and anything not hidden from them. Visitors sometimes, unintentionally, stress cats and a typical response to that is to scratch. In preparation for any guests, be sure to have cat tunnels handy for your cat to relieve any associated stress.
